Chromium is the hardest elemental metal with a hardness of approximately 8.5 (Mohs). Similar to aluminum, chromium forms a passivating oxide layer on its surface, which explains its high corrosion resistance. In stainless steels with a chromium content of at least 12%, this mechanism provides, among other positive properties, effective protection against corrosion.
